Immersive Art Installation Explores Diverse Experiences of “Home” on BC’s West Coast

Life-size dual projection video in an interactive matrix of hanging fabric explores the universality of the search for belonging and home.

Thirty west coast residents from diverse backgrounds talk about thoughts and experiences of political and racial tension, privilege, homelessness, immigration, displacement, and colonialism in south coastal BC. Visitors to the gallery are invited to walk among the life-size projections, where movement and shadow cast by visitors become a part of the experience.

Social practice artist Emily van Lidth de Jeude began creating this work on Nex̱wlélex̱wem/Bowen Island where she resides, and then interviewed people in other west coast locations as well, completing part of the work during a residency in Amsterdam, where it was well-received. She was delighted to see how the experiences and thoughts conveyed by people living on the west coast of North America were so universal as to be appreciated wholly by a Dutch audience. The exhibition was intalled in the Gibson’s Public Art Gallery in February 2023.

This is the second time that w h a t . ho m e will be installed in BC.
